I just read your article on Yahoo. I am the mother of a self-harming teen too. She is 16 and a junior in high school. She began cutting in 9th grade and it has been 2 years of ups and downs between in-patient stays and one residential stay. It has been so hard on our family and particularly on me as her mother. My heart constantly breaks when I see other "typical" teens going about their lives doing typical teenage things, knowing that my daughter is not. Things are looking up recently as her doctor added a new med and we drastically changed things at home. I also switched her out of the high school that she was attending back to the high school in our town as they had a SEAS (Social Emotional Academic Support) program. That has been a God send! She is now making straight A's and is not as stressed out. I wanted to let you know that I appreciate your article and I understand completely your pain. Thank you for putting it out there. I think that more and more people need to talk about it and understand it. Living this life feels shameful at times and I know that it is nothing to feel ashamed about but those feelings persist nonetheless. I hope that your son finds peace and equilibrium.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I am very sorry for the struggles your daughter and family is facing. I am pleased that you have found good support and programs for your daughter, and hope this continues to keep her on a positive path. My son is now 21 and has been "stable," or maybe in "recovery" is a better word, for over a year and I hang onto these good times and hope he will continue to remain well. We spent many years trying to figure out how to help him and it was only when he wanted to seek out help that he really get better. I think it is so important to share our stories in the hopes of reducing stigma and ignorance. Thank you again and best wishes.
