I was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Robin Williams. Not only because we lost a human being who made a mark on the world, but we lost him because of a mental illness. At Williams' first rehearsal, Henry Winkler said he "realized I was in the presence of greatness."
The subject of mental illness and suicide are very close to my heart. Preventing my son from taking his own life was a daily struggle in our household. It is something I worry about often. I understand when someone is in the depths of despair that ending it all seems appealing. I have heard my own son say, "I can't do this anymore, I just want it to be over." But no one knows what is around the corner and what the next event in life will bring.
If you or a loved one is feeling suicidal please get help. The websites below give excellent information on suicide prevention and help.
Remember "laughter is the best medicine." Robin Williams, you will be missed.
